The European Breeders' Fund was established in 1983

The original participating countries were France, Great Britain, and Ireland. They were joined in 1986 by Germany and Italy and in 1989 by Switzerland.

The Fund was established as a European counterpart to the Breeders' Cup scheme which was being set up in the USA for the purpose of revitalizing the American racing industry through revenue being drawn from stallion fees. The EBF was intended to be not only a measure of self-help for European racing, but also a means of securing access for European horses to some of the benefits of the Breeders' Cup scheme through Cross-Registration.

  • Fundamental requirements: Each EBF country must ensure that at least 70% of
maiden two year old races are confined to EBF Eligible horses.
ANY other races may be supported by the EBF, and be confined to EBF Eligible horses.
  • EBF Contributions: Every stallion entering the EBF must pay a fee equal to the average
value of nominations sold each year (subject to £300 / €450 minimum). This fee (called the "Standard Contribution") is discounted to 70% if sold on 1st October terms; 60% if sold on Live Foal terms.
  • Stallions covering 65-85 mares must pay 1½ the Standard Contribution: those covering 86-120
must pay twice the Standard, and those covering 121+ must pay 3 times the Standard.
  • The stallion's progeny, conceived in the year in which the full contribution is made, become EBF
    Eligible when reaching racing age.

BENEFITS OF OWNING AN “EBF NOMINATED” HORSE:

  • An "EBF Nominated" horse is eligible to enter the EBF race programme throughout Europe for its entire racing career.

  • The majority of maiden two-year-old races in Great Britain, Ireland, France, Germany and Italy are programmed for EBF eligible horses. EBF supported races offer enhanced prize money.

  • More attractive to potential purchasers – If being sold as a yearling at one of the major public auctions in Europe or the USA, an EBF eligible sales entry will have “EBF Nominated” printed on the catalogue page. (2yo “Breeze-Ups” and 3 & 4yo National Hunt store horses are also listed as “EBF Nominated” in some European catalogues).

  • The breeder of a horse by an EBF stallion may also earn EBF Breeder’s Prizes when that horse wins an EBF supported race (subject to the EBF terms and conditions operating in that particular EBF country).

  • Extra earning power – in addition to the extensive two-year-old programme, the EBF continues to support more races for older horses, fillies and mares.
  • In Great Britain and Ireland, there is also a significant programme for jumping-bred horses. France and Italy also programme EBF jump races.

  • Any foal by an EBF stallion is eligible to be nominated to the Breeders’ Cup so that it can “enter and run” in the BC Championship Day and the National Stakes Program of races at the lowest entry fee.

  • Any foal by an EBF stallion that has not been nominated to Breeders’ Cup as a foal is still eligible to run in the Breeders’ Cup Championship Day races, but the entry/run fee is three times that required from a BC nominated horse. (It will not qualify for any part of the Breeders’ Cup prize money offered in the National Stakes Program.)

Cross Registration:   EBFBREEDERS' CUP

Stallions entered in EBF and Breeders' Cup are Cross-Registered. This means that the progeny, conceived in the years in which the stallions' contributions are made to one of the relevant organizations, are able to be nominated to the other racing programme. Brief details below:

FOALS BY EBF STALLIONS:- (foaled in ANY country)
  • will be automatically eligible for EBF races, etc. without further payments

  • can be nominated to Breeders' Cup as foals (at either $500 by October 15th, or $1,500 by December 15th). If nominated in this way, they can "enter and run" in the Championship Day races at the current rate, and be eligible for BCL premiums, etc.

  • if not nominated to BCL as foals, can "enter and run" in the Championship Day races at 9% of the purse - exactly the same as BCL sired (but non-nominated) foals.

FOALS BY BREEDERS' CUP STALLIONS:- (foaled in ANY country)

BCL/EBF COMMON FUND

Click Here to visit our BCL/EBF Common Fund page

This fund has been set up to allow stallions, standing outside the Breeders' Cup and EBF areas, to make contributions, which then allow the stallions' progeny to be nominated to the EBF or to BCL, or to both. The foals of contributing stallions can be nominated in the same way as detailed earlier.

The proceeds of stallion contributions are shared between EBF and BCL, whilst the nomination fees for foals/yearlings are retained by the organization to which they are paid.
